How to use it
Paste or type your text to see a live word and character count.
A quick example
“A little more happy.” has 4 words and 20 characters including spaces.
Good to know
Words are counted using language-aware browser segmentation when available. Character counts are Unicode code points; emoji sequences may count as more than one.
Is it free?
Yes. No account, payment or file upload to a server is needed.
Writing to a word limit
Know how the limit is counted
Some portals count characters including spaces, others count words, and some stop you typing at the limit. Check which one applies so your last sentence isn't cut off.
Cut filler first
To trim a draft, remove phrases like 'in order to', 'basically' and 'I would like to say that'. They add words without adding meaning.
Leave a little room
Aim for about 5% under the limit. Different tools count hyphenated words, numbers and emoji slightly differently.
A little more clarity
Are spaces included in the character count?
The first character count includes spaces and line breaks. The second removes whitespace. Counts use Unicode code points, so some emoji made from multiple code points can count as more than one character.
How is reading time estimated?
The estimate divides the word count by 200 words per minute and rounds up. It is a rough guide for ordinary reading. Technical writing, unfamiliar languages, tables and careful proofreading can take longer.
